Mother’s Day 2016 Spending Expected to Reach $21 Billion

Mother's Gifts

From Gifts & Dec--This year, Americans will splurge big on mom with jewelry, electronics, and special outings for Mother’s Day, according to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey.

Last year a record-high was set for Mother’s Day spending, with consumers shelling out an average of $172.63 each. The projected average for 2016 is slightly down, with consumers expected to spend $172.22 for the holiday.

According to the survey, consumers plan to spend $4.2 billion on jewelry (given by 35.3% of shoppers), $4.1 billion on special outings such as dinner or brunch (given by 55.2%), $2.4 billion on flowers (66.5%), $2.2 billion on gift cards (43.2%), $1.9 billion respectively on clothing (35.4%) and consumer electronics (13.8%) and $1.6 billion on personal services, like a day at the spa (22.5 %). Greeting cards are the most commonly purchased gift at 78.4 percent of those surveyed but account for only $792 million of the projected spending.

While it isn’t noted in the survey, Mother’s Day coincides with Baby Shower Season; the holiday is a great opportunity for baby and maternity retailers to advertise a variety of specialty gifts and luxury items for expectant mothers.
